During the time of Caliph Harun Rashid, there was an elder, his name was Bahlul, Harun Rashid sometimes used to joke with him; but in laughter, Hazrat Bahlul used to say very useful things.
One day Hazrat Bahlul went to Harun Rashid, Harun Rashid gave him a stick and said:
Bahlul! Give this stick to the person who seems to you more foolish than you.
Hazrat Bahlul came with the stick, after a few days Harun Rashid became so seriously ill that there was no hope of his survival, in such a state Bahlul came to meet him, after greeting him asked: Amir al-Mu'minin! How are you?
Harun Rashid replied: Bahlul! It is a very long journey.
Hazrat Bahlul asked, where is the journey?
Harun Rashid said: The journey to the hereafter.
Hazrat Bahlul (RA) asked: Amir-ul-Mu'minin! When will you return from this journey?
Harun Rashid said: No one returns from this journey.
To this Hazrat Bahlul (RA) said: Who will go with you on this journey, and what preparations have you made for this journey?
Harun Rashid got angry and said: What kind of talk are you talking about? Bahlul! No one goes with you on the final journey, I am going empty-handed.
Then what happened, Hazrat Bahlul (RA) spoke up: "Good sir! Such a long journey and no helper, then take this stick of yours, till today I have not found anyone more foolish than you, when you go on a short journey, preparations start being made several days in advance, the entire Lao army is with you; but you have not made any preparations for such a long journey, after which you will never return. (No one returns to the world after death).
Harun Rashid started crying after hearing this and said: Bahlul! We used to think you were foolish, today it has been found that there is no one wiser than you.
Dear everyone! The truth is that a wise person is the one who prepares for the journey to the hereafter; because this world and all the things in the world are for a few days, then if not today then tomorrow we have to leave this world and we have to give an account of every good and bad deed, heaven for a good deed and hell for a bad deed. The decision will be made; therefore, from today onwards, decide that we have to keep the Hereafter in mind and not waste our Hereafter in the pursuit of this world.
